The Newspapers in Education (NIE) program provides approximately 716,000 newspapers annually to Pitt County Schools, East Carolina University, Pitt Community College and various private schools. The newspapers are provided at no cost to teachers and students and are used as part of the classroom curriculum.
Did you know that 14% of adults in Pitt County have below basic literacy skills? They cannot complete a job application, use a television guide, read a street map or road sign or read the instructions on a medicine bottle. Simple everyday tasks present real problems. Literacy Volunteers-Pitt County is an organization whose mission is to improve the literacy skills of adults in our community. This is accomplished through trained volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one and small group training.
